This is genuinely one of the best non fiction books I have read in years. The scope is wide. The main focus is how progressives are increasingly co-opted into conspiracy groups promoting a degraded and nonsensical critique of power structures. She examines the ways these groups appropriate victimhood of minorities and subvert language to disarm legitimate criticism. The book is incredibly nuanced and well referenced in scientific, philosophical and creative literature. It is deeply self examining and devotes a few chapters to her own examination of how the idea of a doppelgänger applies to the idea of a Jewish state (Israel) which at once places itself as victim and oppressor. I honestly can’t speak highly enough of Doppelgänger. The problem is I now have a new reading list of about 6 books she discusses which I am desperate to read (as well as her other work).
