What a terrible movie!
While I understand that diversity is important but when it comes to period dramas, I find it too contrived and forced that such movies and (some TV shows) represent people of colour as though their reality in those ages was all glorious, that it was so easy for them to encircle themselves with wealthy white royals.
Mrs Davington's melodramatic acting threw me off completely, especially when she said to Julia at the ball after meeting Mr Malcolm, "I will call you" I mean, really! Aren't we in the 19th century, 1862? Telephones were not even readily available then. According to history, the first telephone was available in the UK only in 1877 between two businesses, and phones only started becoming available in homes around the mid-1900s. So I do not understand how the producers let that slide.
