I saw La La Land at the cinema when it first came out and I loved every bit of this movie - the story, the characters, the acting, the views, the buildings and settings, special effects, choreography inc ballet, waltz, tap and modern and, in particular, the music and the lyrics. For me, the highlights of this fabulous film were:
1. the music written by Justin Hurwitz, which I found captivating - a mix of so many styles, rhythms, instruments and tempos creating so many different moods, evoking so many emotions. I sat right through the credits so I wouldn't miss a single note of the music and I bought the soundtrack CD that same day. A heartfelt thank you Justin Hurwitz for creating a masterpiece.
The highlight of this highlight is the wonderful way in which Justin Hurwitz put together "Epilogue”. The way he moves from full orchestral to jazz band to loud, high solo trumpet and then back into full orchestral with a crescendo of strings is sensational. I wouldn’t have believed they could fit together in such a delightful, thrilling and mind-blowing way. Ace!
2. "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)": Justin Hurwitz’s beautiful composition, amazing lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul brought to life by Emma Stone's astounding delivery. I found her performance absolutely mesmerising and still do every time I watch it or hear it. After watching the film, I learnt this song by heart. It is just so beautiful.
