Great concept but very poor writing style. Lacks sophistication, nuance and depth. It had the potential to be groundbreaking and fell horribly short. Single person narration style fails the book entirely, as the narrator cannot be relied on for completeness of perspective. Some lovely prose regarding the sensitive topics that are touched on in this novel, but very unrealistic storylines, overemphasis on character's looks and sexual chemistry and just grazes the surface of the darkness being described. I honestly was ready to throw in the towel a quarter of the way through, but finished it just to see if it would redeem itself somehow. It did not.
