It so far is pretty good. Itโs kind of cheesy at times and unrealistic (but isnโt that what romance is), but it still has good vibes. The books were much more wholesome and for a younger audience, but the show is for an older teenage audience.
There were some changes in the show, but nothing crazy drastic and the storyline doesnโt follow the books. It is (as it says in the show) BASED on The Summer I Turned Pretty.
The books have more of an innocence to them than the show does. The acting is pretty good.
I think if you read the books and love the more innocent coming of age storyline this isnโt for you. Considering the books were in Bellyโs eyes, this show gives you a look at the other characters lives, so it isnโt going to be told the same as the books from Bellyโs POV. I think though that some of the characters are a little bit altered to fit the targeted viewers now, which gives you slightly different characters from the books. I do wish they kept more with the book than they did in the show, because I was looking foreword to possibly reading/revisiting the book and seeing it on screen. I also liked the lighthearted innocent romance that the books gave me, so I am a little disappointed with the show in that way. I think thatโs a personal preference though and that the show does fit teenagers now.
It is nice though that the show is different because it makes it so that it isnโt as predictable, but even still I wish they sticked to the book a little bit more.
Anways, in short, it is good, but donโt expect it to be just like the books, because it is not. I would give it a 3.4/5.
I would also like to add that the show is definitely 15-16+ v. the books that were more for 12-15 year olds.
