It so far is pretty good. It’s kind of cheesy at times and unrealistic (but isn’t that what romance is), but it still has good vibes. The books were much more wholesome and for a younger audience, but the show is for an older teenage audience.
There were some changes in the show, but nothing crazy drastic and the storyline doesn’t follow the books. It is (as it says in the show) BASED on The Summer I Turned Pretty.
The books have more of an innocence to them than the show does. The acting is pretty good.
I think if you read the books and love the more innocent coming of age storyline this isn’t for you. Considering the books were in Belly’s eyes, this show gives you a look at the other characters lives, so it isn’t going to be told the same as the books from Belly’s POV. I think though that some of the characters are a little bit altered to fit the targeted viewers now, which gives you slightly different characters from the books. I do wish they kept more with the book than they did in the show, because I was looking foreword to possibly reading/revisiting the book and seeing it on screen. I also liked the lighthearted innocent romance that the books gave me, so I am a little disappointed with the show in that way. I think that’s a personal preference though and that the show does fit teenagers now.
It is nice though that the show is different because it makes it so that it isn’t as predictable, but even still I wish they sticked to the book a little bit more.
Anways, in short, it is good, but don’t expect it to be just like the books, because it is not. I would give it a 3.4/5.
I would also like to add that the show is definitely 15-16+ v. the books that were more for 12-15 year olds.
