This is what I loved about the final season.
At the end of season 4, his inner side through Rhys Montrose, told him that he was eventually gonna end up in jail or worse and it actually happened.
When we are watching this show, our morality goes out the window because we are challenged to do so.
We get to see things from a serial killer's perspective and end up sympathizing with him because hell, most of us relate to having had a terrible childhood.
From a psychological standpoint, the show is a masterpiece and teaches us a lot of things despite the way that they're packaged. So the finale was able to ground us, through this electric shock, that despite your pain, how you handled it was very very wrong and you need to be held accountable.
We relate to loving people despite their damage and how we get lost in the matrix and end up making excuses for our abusers. Just like he believed that killing these people was a show of love through protecting and bulldozing.
It's all, love.
Plus Joe ignored all the red flags that Bronte presented because his time was up, his karma had started doing its job and it was time for him to get clipped.
The universe works in mysterious ways by laying all these traps that lead you to your unsolicited character development lessons.
