god. where do i even start? first of all, if i had to describe this film in one phrase, it'd be that it's the EPITOME of misogyny. the entirety of this movie is a guy controlling the girl he loves and her going with it cause she's seemingly frightened and shy to do anything else about it. Kabir, as the older one in the relationship, uses his status to get what he wants, like demand he sees Preeti during class and tells her to leave class to be with him, to only hang out with people HE CHOOSES, even. in the entire movie, Kabir belittle and degrades women, and Preeti was no exception. he even attempts to r*pe a woman with a freaking knife when she doesn't have sex with him. sure, he backs off after but what the heck?????
just because this movie did so incredibly well in 2019, (it was a box office hit in india) does not remove the fact it HAS SUCH A BAD PLOT JEEZ. bro literally drinks while working, does nothing but stays grumpy, yellls, shouts when he doesn't get what he wants, gets aggressive as a main solution to everything, and you expect me to ROOT FOR HIM?????? i am aware that bollywood already has a prettty bad reputation with misogyny and showing gender equality but this was so...ugh. let's not forget that when Preeti was faced with Kabir telling her she had to choose him or HER FAMILY and she was unsure, he SLAPS HER telling her she has six hours to make her choice. she still goes back to choose him and during so there's this sequence of him doing "manly" stuff like doing pushups and drinking and injecting himself with drugs to pass time. the fact that he still gets his happy ending makes me so mad cause he doesn't get any character development whatsoever. he says he's sorry and all of a sudden everyone is happy again
if anything i'm sure this is why men, primarily south asian viewers, love this film so much, cause men like Kabir Singh are so praised and they wanna be him so bad, along with a woman who will do whatever he wants them to. men like this don't want wives, at this rate, they want slaves. the issue with kabir singh isn't even it's depiction of real life people here. Rather, it is so concerning when a movie presents a violent, destructive misogynist as a misunderstood, cool, sexy guy who "loves purely" and "wears his emotions on his sleeve" because women have endured YEARS and YEARS of suffering at the hands of these men like this. k thanks for reading i's actually be really surprised if anyone read this all the way through lmao k bye <3
