I definitely did not enjoy this book. As a Mexican I was hoping to read a story that reflected our experience but I was found with a character julia that clearly hates where she comes from. If a white person were to read this book it would be hard to not come away thinking Mexicans are dirty, lazy people. This book should be advertised as a mental health story. However this mental health story isnt told holistically. The character focuses on all of the negative things that are happening around her and she never comes around to narriting all the ways she contributed to her own suffering. This book depicts the mexican collectivist culture in such a negative light WITHOUT giving justice to all the beautiful things about it too. If they make this book into a movie I hope they change the whole vibe and highlight the beauty in the culture as well.
