There was a lot of hope when I heard they were making The Wheel Of Time series but a lot of fear too being that I have been in love with the books for the past decade. Going back to reread them again and again. Sadly my fear of the series being butchered is what is happening.
I wanted to it turn off after the first episode. But I kept watching each episode hoping things would get better but it only gets worse with each episode.
I am going to just touch on a few things because I could go on about each and everything but won’t.
Robert Jordan did an amazing job at creating an immersive and huge world which is lost in the series. There are times when getting to one village or city could take weeks in the books and Robert was still able to make a great story out of those travels. In the series it seems the characters are just taking a day or two to travel to one village to the next. The Two Rivers is suppose to be so far from most cities that the political forces rarely touch the village.
The romances between characters in the series is very unnecessary and added as a failed attempt to show the bond between the characters. Yes Rand and Egwene did think they would eventually be married when older but did not have a sexual relationship. Perrin did not have romantic feelings for Egwene and did not have a wife in the beginning of the series. I feel this will dilute the future relationships that happen in the book.
The Dragon Reborn could be man or women in the series?!? Come on… a big part of the book is the a man holding the power is feared by many and why the Dragon Reborn tends to be feared because of the power he will hold and the madness that comes with being a man holding the power. There is much more to it but the dragon reborn can only be a man in the book.
I hate how they depict Mat in the series. They make him seem cowardly and a drunk. In the book he is humorous, loyal and sometimes impulsive. Yes when he takes the dagger it does bring darkness into him but once released he recovers and back to his good old self.
There are so many different cultures and different regions in the book. The series seeks to blend every culture into ever city. I don’t get the point of blending all the cultures. Every region has its own styles, traditions, beliefs, races etc. Blending at the cultures really dilutes how every region is unique.
The character development is so flat in the series. Robert Jordan created characters you love to love and love to hate. After 7 episodes in the series, I still feel no attachment to any of the characters.
There is no chemistry between any of the main characters in the series. These are teenagers that grew up with each other and have been life long friends. I don’t feel any of that. Again, using romantic relationships to “try” to show attachment to each other.
What happened to Thom being almost a mentor to Rand and Mat!? Thom ends up being a big part of the books and they did not do him justice on the series.
I could go on and on but I’ll leave it at that. I really hope the writers and producers take all these reviews from the true fans of the books and reconsider how they plan to continue this series. I can see I am not the only one who feels this way.
