This movie should never have been produced, and it certainly should never have been released by professionals. I was a 14 year old in 1991.
This is a very sparce representation of 1991, and more indicative or the 80s, with few exceptions.
The boys who star in this movie were not even instructed on how to hold a cigarette, which would have not been an attribute of a vulgar teenage boy in 91. Their continuous fast paced dialog was so awkwardly enunciated, it sounded forced and disingenuous. The girl who used the phrase, "totally cringe" really proved to me that the screenplay writer had no business writing about an early 90s time period piece in which he had no knowledge or experience.
The Justin Bieber hairdoes, and a predominantly mixture of 70s and 80s music, clothing and behaviors emulate a pathetic attempt at merging summer camp movies like Meatballs, after school specials of the 80s with The Catcher in the Rye.
For those who actually grew up in this time: two girls are just learning how to dance to Hangin Tough (1989), while supposedly living in 1991. No one wore grunge clothing and there were no grunge bands depicted anywhere. At least they played One More Try and Unbelievable, but it was mostly 70s and 80s tunes played on the radio at a swimming pool in 1991. Even if these boys were behind the time, teens would have been listening to more modern rock on a radio station blaring at a public pool.
I decided to watch Meatballs immediately afterwards. Two kids are wearing exactly the same shirts as kids in Snack Shack, and it was released in 1979.
