Good plot similar to Sea of trees, but where that movie was more focused on spiritual growth and the meaning of life as well as living with the past, this movie was about self isolation, and hiding from the past. Spoilers@@@@ Sara is the main protagonist who ventures into the forest to look for Jess. Why Jess went there was hinted at that she might’ve contemplated suicide but changed her mind. Sara is accompanied by two guides both of which warn her not to trust what she sees or hears, so what does she do? Yup, she ignores their advice. One guy actually sticks around and waits at the campsite overnight with her. Sara wanders around aimlessly, encounters spirits that warn her not to trust her guide. At one point she falls through a pit and shatters her ankle because she screams bloody murder once she sees ghosts in the cave she effortlessly runs away without a hobble? When she is rescued by her guide she thanks him, but once outside the pit she begins to be paranoid again. Why would he rescue you from the pit just to kill you again?!?! The script is really flawed trying to create a mystery of what happened to Jess and how did their parents die but the story never gets around to answering any of it. At the end of the film, Sara remembers that her parents didn’t die in a car accident but that her father killed her mother with a shotgun then he turned the gun on himself. The reveal was anticlimactic because we had no glimpse of their marriage life and the tragic death of her parents had no bearing on the current situation she is in. It’s a series of unrelated events that doesn’t connect the dots very well. Last but not least is Jess being reintroduced at the last minute. She escapes by following the search team out into the parking lot. Jess’ rescue happened on her own without Sara’s actions being a factor! So you have to ask yourself, if Sara had just followed her guides advice, Jess would have been rescued anyways- her actions had no consequence!
