An excellent film that could be seen as a predecessor to the likes of “Coraline.” Beautiful, terrifying, magical and unforgiving. If this film was released today it would be considered an artistic masterpiece. While “Wizard of Oz” could be interpreted as a dream, this is indeed a feverish nightmare. I cannot help but to think of all the sequels to Willy Wonka that failed horribly to capture the magic and wonder of the original. Return to Oz does not make this mistake, but rather creates its own universe in which to flourish, and flourish it does.
