With the recent release of the second season of the show and the response from a wider and more diverse audience than ever. I think we can safely drop the defence that critics of the game are just mad because of some woke agenda.
Even this wider, diverse audience are voicing the exact same criticisms about the narrative direction the sequel of the game took.
The gameplay is great but unfortunately it is a narrative driven game. One that spends a great deal of time having the player watch cutscenes and passively engage with it through sections where they simply walk and talk. That is a large portion of the game that gameplay unfortunately can't make up for and since that same gameplay is secondary to the narrative as the driving force of the game it becomes even less compelling.
The character deconstruction and ultimate theme and lesson of the game don't show respect to the players intelligence. Rather than a nuanced or original take they go for a cut and dry, elementary, and surface level exploration on violence, vengeance and the balance of morals and ethics. It's pure drivel. Just take out the blood and gore and you've seen this story and its beats already... inside of children's cartoons. I'm not kidding. I think every popular childhood show you can think of has an episode that tells essentially the same lesson you get in this game by the end. That's not what a mature audience is looking for. The people who praise this are the same type of people who like watching an isekai anime with the same set up they've seen a thousand times and seal clap for the whole thing.
This game outside of its gameplay is awful torture for the target audience and fans. It's like watching the movie wavelength(1976). The cinematics and principles of the film challenged traditions with its originality but actually watching it is a test of will. That's this game. The parts of the game where you actively play are fun, original, and innovative. But the rest, like watching wavelength, is a test of will. And like those fans that enjoy watching their 100th isekai anime. It's clear the people enjoying this game share similarities. If you can be like that; not think about the narrative too hard or engage with any outer influencing factors, turn your brain off. I can see how it might be enjoyable then. I think most of us just expect more from their entertainment.
