The Body Guard is a mixed bag of sorts. It's a thriller, action movie, drama and romance movie in one. However, I think the movie struggles with identity and tone due it's umbrella approach to said genres. Rushed romance, underdeveloped and unlikable characters, unnatural dialogue and awkward editing plague this film. It's clunky, poorly executed and a bit schlocky.
There are some positive elements. Keven Costner is always natural in the classic, alpha, leading man, architype roles. He's great in this. Whitney Houston is stunningly, beautiful, charming(although annoyingly aloof at times)and she gives a descent performance for a first timer. The date scene is sweet, romantic and interesting. I wish the movie spent more time on moments like this. Houston's loud charasmatic personality is the perfect contrast to Costners, dry, serious, all business approach to the role and it creates an interesting dynamic and chemistry between them. The movie is also fun. If you're looking for fun. It's not a perfect film by any means but it serves as mindless entertainment and simple teae jerker if your the type to easily be swayed by any implication of love andca sappy soundtrack.
