I am glad I had to read this book half a century ago. Of course Thomas Mann is a great narrator, and one can learn from his way of using language. If Felix Krull is too long for you, read "Das Wunderkind", The Child Prodigy, if you can read that one in German, definitely in German. Heinrich Heine and Thomas Mann are the two grandmasters of irony in German language culture.
