I have mixed emotions about how I feel about the movie because I saw an interview with Jennifer Aniston and Dolly Parton about the movie and Jennifer Aniston went on and on talking about how the movie teaches young girls to just be who they are and be themselves blah blah blah but yet both Dolly Parton and Jennifer Aniston are very much made up with make up, wigs, expensive clothes etc... Oh by the way for those of you reading this who don’t know, Anniston not only starred in the movie, she was Executive Producer and Parton wrote six of the songs for the movie. Don’t get me wrong I’m a huge Dolly Parton fan. Jennifer Aniston not so much, but I did enjoy her on Friends. But how can I take this movie seriously if it’s meant to be a positive message to young girls being completely happy with being who you are and being yourself, if the two major stars who backed it are well, what else can I say, but superficial?? So back to the movie, I did watch it after seeing that interview first, and low and behold Jennifer Aniston was my favorite character. I am from the south and I thought she really nailed her part well. Most of the remaining acting was just sub par. Do I think this movie will teach young girls to love themselves any way they look? Maybe, maybe not. But I feel I was a bit jaded going into it after seeing that Parton/Anniston interview. Maybe had the movie been produced by two unknows that did not look all made up I would feel differently. Also what was the purpose of the lesbian in the movie? She had very little storyline or screen time and I just did not see where she fit in to this movie at all. I can see where some people might say having a lesbian in the movie helps with acceptance of gay people, but I found her character to be stereo-typical of what a lesbian looks and acts like. I just thought she added nothing to the movie and most of her scenes, to me, were so cheesy they were hard to watch. With that being said and to take it one step further, yes there were other gay characters in the movie, the drag queens, and I totally understood their existence in the movie as teachers of performing onstage if you will. Okay I have ranted enough. And some of you might be thinking what does it matter who produced or made the movie because most young girls who see the movie have no idea who Jennifer Aniston and Dolly Parton are. But I know, and to me it just wasn’t real enough. Steven B. gives it six out of ten stars. 😁
