SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW
I just finished watching Caveat and as an avid horror fan I would rate it a solid 7/10. It does follow the typical spooky house syndrome which in this film was executed very well. They had a beautiful attention to detail when it came to scars, logic, and even down to their backtracks and sound effects within the film.
I will say that not many questions were given answers. And a lot of the implemented ideas need a little bit of deductive reasoning to really grasp. They don’t plainly tell you exactly why he was in the house and you don’t really find out till the end that they were trying to kill him until the friend vaguely mentions it. I’ve seen a lot of other reviews mentioning things that they didn’t think were a necessary part of the film and thus it felt like a bunch of jumbled together ideas. But once you understand they were trying to kill him you understand the chain and everything else. I do think they could have done a little better with explaining things. But I also think that was not the intent of the horror. This movie is more about the intensity and suspense as opposed to a fully marked out storyline. And there are a few unrealistic scenarios, for example the girl taking an eternity to reload the crossbow (twice btw) and neither person doing anything about it. It also felt like it went very slowly. They really prioritized the slow building intensity which was great paired with their excellent music timing, but with so many unanswered questions it felt semi drug along. Aside from that though no part of me felt like i wasted time watching the film and they did a good job on makeup.
