I watched this movie for my postcolonial graduate course. I also have read the book. Coetzee’s depiction of the horrors of Imperialistic rule while shadowing South African Apartheid is a work of art. Difficult to swallow but nonetheless a necessary viewing if we are to continue to deconstruct colonial narratives.

Huge Christina Ricci fan. And Samuel Jackson as well. This was a win from the start. Just love this movie. Often difficult, often very raw. But the freedom in Christina’s eyes and her movements while dancing in the bar scene give birth to an overcoming, an unexpected survivor and that says it all.
