I loved this film so much. *spoiler alert* I think the film should be called Beau is afraid of death. Beau is a man who spends his life cocooned against what he perceives to be the horrors of life, death and destruction waiting around every corner. Perhaps it is his mother who put these fears in his head. Whatever the case it shuts off his own desire and the very human need for sensual pleasure. When he misses his flight to visit his mother on the anniversary of his father’s death he is forced to undergo an epic journey to his childhood home. He is like Alice in a dark and sinister Wonderland, reflecting on his relationship with his mother from birth. The film shows that to be afraid of death is to be afraid of life and miss out on its pleasures. A fantastic performance from Joaquin Phoenix. Ignore the naysayers and go and watch it with an open mind, just allow yourself to escape into the dream world Aster has created. Best film I’ve seen all year.
