A Week Away is an incredible Spiritual Journey. Not only for the characters, but for whoever watches it.
One thing I highly suggest is watch it twice. The musical factor might overwhelm you the first time and you might think it's not very deep or well done, but seeing it a second time makes you think harder about the characters, and how you can use it in your life. So, as said before, watch it a second time and you'll enjoy it more than the first time!
The characters are fun, entertaining, but they have a voice, and you can feel what they're going through, and you can see what God did in their lives.
Will Hawkins, played by Kevin Quinn, starts out as a rebellious, slightly jerky, teenager who buried his grief, of losing his parents, by committing crimes, and running away from anyone who got too close to him. He is a complete mess, and he's completely lost. The only one who can save him is God. Will spent his life blaming God for what happened to him, but he has yet to realize everything that went wrong was his choice, his own fault. When he goes to camp Aweegaway, his life is forever changed. Not only he finds the girl of his dreams, he finds the Way, the Truth, the Life. He starts to warm up to his new friends, and now the choice is up to him. Will he keep hiding away leaving everyone he knew and loved behind because he's afraid of being hurt again, or will he choose to love and accept God's love?
This is a choice everybody has to make. The Lord loves you, and he never stops trying to reach out to you, it's your choice to decide what path you're on.
There's lots of humor and fun in the movie. Will's new best friend George is great. He's funny, isn't afraid to be himself, and never lets Will's grouchiness get to him personally.
Presley was a sweet girl who just wanted to know if she was good enough, and of course, she is.
Sean is Will's rival, and the arrogant popular kid. He is a good example for learning Christians. Just because you say you're a Christian and do good things like saving narwals or donating blood doesn't mean you're a Christian, and if you're doing it just to look good, you're wasting your time. Everything you do is for the Glory of God, not for your own gain. There's a really good message in his story too.
Avery is terrific. She isn't just Will's love interest, she's strong. She didn't fall for his charms and act, she loved him for who he was. She could see right through him. She didn't care what he did, and she just wanted to love him and show him God's love. She knew Will wanted to love, and to be loved again, but she also understood he didn't know how to. She may sound "perfect", but she isn't. She doesn't know everything, she doesn't have all the answers. She's a young Christian, who is just doing what she's supposed to do, follow the Lord and do the best she can.
I'll admit the musical part is a little crazy at first, but it's still fun.
My only complaint is I would have liked it to be a little longer to add further depth in some of the characters.
In conclusion after this long, long description, this is a great fun movie with great lessons to learn, with so much Truth in it.
I recommend this movie to anybody!
