I have about 10 hours I game so far. I will try to critique this game without comparing it too much to the first Dying Light, but that may not be completely avoidable.
So far, the setting (currently in the first area still so this may change as I progress) is repetitive. I enjoyed the greenery, but as I have explored the first zone, I have gotten bored with the same rooftop styles.. the same ramps up onto the rooftops.. the same interiors.. it seems like someone got a little too triggerhappy on that copy-paste tool. There is not a drastic difference in elevation, so the world seems a little flat at this point. There is also a lack of landmarks to tell you where you are. And when the streets look as repetitive as they are, this makes traveling a slog as you have to continually open your map.
The combat feels good. I have still not gotten used to the ability to perform parkour combat reliably, but that comes down to me and my playstyle. Fighting other humans could be more challenging. Currently their attacks are super telegraphed compared to that of zombies, but I think that has more to do with zombies not being telegraphed enough than the other way around. Regardless, I enjoy combat so far.
The parkour, which is one of the main draws of the game, feels nice. This ties in with the setting a bit, but it does at times feel repetitive since the area to play in is repetitive. HOWEVER. The devs did mix up rooftops a bit when it comes to obstacles. There have been times thay I am impressed with some of the clever paths I can take during a challenge or while being chased. This is the game's strongest point.
Night cycle has been altered to be more accessible. This is where I will compare to the first Dying Light, as I have changed my gameplay the most due to the changes in night time gameplay. The new night cycle allows easier entrance to dark areas where you find the real loot. Getting to these areas can sometimes be risky, as you need to get onto the streets with howlers spotting you and calling in their goons to chase you down. But once inside, you have an easier time than if you went in the daytime.
These are just some points I thought of going over. I haven't done much story, just explored and did some side questing so far, so I cannot speak on the writing quality too much. Its a bit above average for now. As I play on, this could change. Setting, which is to me one of the biggest draws of the game (besides a pretty good parkour system) is currently uninspired and really brings down my overall opinion.
