The Resident – Not Even Close to Real Life
Okay, I tried watching this TV shows and honestly, it just feels super off. Like, I get that shows dramatize stuff, but this one takes it way too far. It’s supposed to be about doctors and hospitals, but almost nothing feels realistic at all.
First off, the way the hospital runs in the show? Total chaos. There’s no way a real hospital would function like that. Everything feels rushed and dramatic just for the sake of drama. Patients come in and five seconds later they’re being wheeled into surgery like it’s some kind of action movie. That’s not how medicine works. There are protocols, checkups, and, you know… actual procedures that matter. It’s like they just skipped over all that because it’s too “boring” for TV, but that’s what makes the real medical field so intense and impressive.
And don’t even get me started on the main character, Conrad. He’s a third-year resident trauma doctor, right? But sometimes the guy walks around the hospital wearing a plain t-shirt and skinny jeans, like he just rolled out of bed and decided to show up. No scrubs, no white coat, nothing. I mean… seriously? What kind of hospital lets its resident doctors dress like they’re about to go grab coffee with friends? And even when he does wear scrubs, they’re totally mismatched — like a gray scrub top with black scrub pants. It looks like he grabbed whatever was clean that morning. It makes the whole thing feel like a joke. I’ve seen medical students dress more professionally during shadowing days than he does as a freaking resident doctor. And as a medical student, I can say that appearances do matter when it comes to doctor-patient relationships. Patients trust you more when you look more presentable — it’s about professionalism and reassurance.
And while we’re talking about professionalism, what’s up with the chief of surgery and all the other attendings constantly turning to the resident for how to diagnose a patient? Like, excuse me? Why is the teacher being taught by their own student? If the attending doctors have no clue what’s going on and have to rely on a third-year resident to advise them on what to do, then the whole residency program is just trash. Honestly, all of the attendings should just go back to school and relearn how to practice medicine, because that’s not how medical hierarchy works. It’s literally the opposite of how it’s supposed to function. You don’t ask the trainee for advice on a diagnosis every single time. And while we’re at it—why is the cardiac surgeon doing trauma surgery jobs? Like they don’t have their own specialty to focus on? It makes no sense. It makes the hospital feel unsafe and not like a place where actual medicine is being practiced.
I know it’s just a TV show, but it’s kind of frustrating because people who don’t know anything about the medical field might think this is how it really is. But it’s not. Not even close. If you’re looking for something that feels even more realistic, this ain’t it because this show is a joke!!
