I have worked in the blind community for nearly 40 years. The depiction of Murphy with a constant blank stare straight ahead is inaccurate. It stated in the first episode that she lost her sight completely to retinitis pigmentosa (RP) at 14 years of age. This is uncommon. RP is a progressive disease, but usually someone does not lose all of their sight until their 50's. In addition, those who have lost their site completely later in life, even at 14 know how to track people with their eyes by turning their head towards a speaker. If you are going to depict a blind person, at least get it right. The writers of this tv show did not do their research. The actor playing Murphy did not do her research.
Also the way she uses her cane is like someone who is newly blind. Based on the story, she has likely been completely blind since 14. Even those who are not completely blind, use canes to assist them in getting around.
Aside from all the inaccuracies of Murphy's blindness, this show is rife with stereotypes about blindness and African Americans. The African Americans in the show are either drug dealers or her goody two shoes adoptive father.
Finally, I am not interested in watching a show about a main character who practices self-degrading behavior whether that person is male or female, disabled or not, European or African.
