Assassin’s Creed: Shadow – A Disgrace for the Game Industry
Assassin's Creed: Shadow is a disgrace for the gaming industry, and it's frustrating to see so many people giving it a pass. Just a year ago, Dragon's Dogma 2 received harsh criticism for its microtransactions, which were largely meaningless. Yet, despite these criticisms, AC: Shadow seems to be getting away with way much worse. This game is built around a shop that feels more suited to a pay-to-win, free-to-play MMO—except it’s a 70-euro solo game.
Instead of rewarding players with cool gear or progression through exploration, AC: Shadow locks everything exciting behind microtransactions. It's not even about essential gear—it's the cool stuff, the rewards that should come from gameplay and exploration, that are behind a paywall. For an Overpriced title, it's unacceptable. The game is designed to push players into spending money just to get the content that should be part of the experience from the start.
What’s worse is how AC: Shadow fails in the areas where other games, like Ghost of Tsushima, excel. If you want a game set in Japan with rewarding exploration and a sense of accomplishment, Ghost of Tsushima (or the upcoming Ghost of Yotei) is the far better choice.
To add insult to injury, imagine playing Elden Ring and being told that you need to pay to use any of the boss weapons. That’s essentially what AC: Shadow does—it locks away exciting gear and progression behind a paywall, robbing players of the satisfaction that comes from exploring and discovering new things in-game. This kind of monetization should not be accepted in the industry, especially in a "AAAA" solo game.
Assassin's Creed: Shadow is nothing but a front for a cash grab, designed to take your money. Ubisoft has created a game that isn’t about rewarding players for their time and effort; it’s about pushing you into paying for content that should have been earned through regular gameplay. This kind of business model should not be accepted by the gaming community. Don’t support this, and never give Ubisoft your money again. If we keep allowing this, it’ll become the norm, and that's something we can’t let happen.
