I love books and stories of all kinds, from all genres, but this story was just HARD to get through.
Our POV Character is painfully boring and dry. The most interesting character of the story is the "main love interest," and she's so infrequently present that she's almost a tertiary character for the majority of the book.
There are so many pieces here that should lend to it being a fantastic story with plenty of opportunity for world-building, and yet it largely fails to take advantage of any of those elements.
