Spoilers alert.. (critical review)
Enjoyable watch. Although i could not help but mind over a few tiny and simple details in the grand scheme of all things considered. I wondered at first if i had i missed something or did they just completely make it questionable on purpose?
They are sure to make it clear for a start that on the first night they spent together after graduation. An evening of almost-romance and a morning of missed opportunity. The idea they hadnt actually had sexual intercourse made the foundations of their friendship and story to follow. In the final episode Emma refers to herself as the girl he “shagged” at graduation. Which confuses viewers as we was led to believe that nothing actually took place on that first night, which was more appealing than the latter.
Also this whole is she called Emma or Emily thing because its clear that Dexter shouted out Emily on a few occasions including in the final episode.
We saw his mum mistakening her name for Emily instead of Emma in which she was corrected, but then why thoughout the series does her name change frequently this is a little frustrating.
Also there are scenes they missed out from the book and the time frame where dex returns from india as in the book he went on to italy. This is understandable if it was to limit screen time but it included a vital detail about a letter from Dexter which Emily didnt recieve.
With that being said, many could say that the ending is a cheap cop out for a storyline with Emmas tragic death just adding to the making of the character who is Dexter. With the book and original film being centred more around Dexters character. Some could argue that its a love story written throught the eyes of a man and its clear to see it was a male author who wrote the book.
Watching the new netflix series, it was nice to see them put so much focus and love in emmas character the attention on her and her writing this made it all the more unbearable to watch the final episodes knowing whats to come. Then the flashbacks to follow of the pure grief that Dexter is suffering. Its a heartbreaking beautiful and gripping love story.
One last thing to add. What a truly heart clenching idea that on the day they met - on St Swithins Day, is was beautiful sunshine with Dexter saying the century old quote “St. Swithins Day, if thou dost rain, For forty days it will remain. St. Swithin's day if thou be fair, For forty days 'twill rain nae mair.
To which Emma replies “i dont think its going to rain today”.
Fast forward to over a century later on their anniversary. St Swithins Day. It just so happened to be raining which unfolds to be the tragic night of the accident.
Almost enough for hearts to break. Despite all minor mistakes and regretably no spoof reading leading to a few goofs in the series. I still cried, laughed and watched in awe which you cant help as you follow the captivating story of these two characters.
