Nothing short of brilliant, Backman's "My Friends" creates a quintet of fully-realized characters that are funny, shallow, brave, foolish, mean, dysfunctional, and loyal. Most of all, loyal. And he uses these amazing, infuriating characters to fill a story within a story within a mystery.
