What to say about Babylon. Well, It's not going to be loved by everyone. Let's start with the positives:
It's incredibly well cast, all three of the lead actors are superb. and margot Robbie in particular has so much scope to show off her talent. It looks and sounds beautiful, the constant pace of the soundtrack keep this movie moving at 100 miles per hour from start to finish. It manages to invoke a certain nostalgia too. Making you long for more films of substance and creativity in a time where we're overwhelmed by movies full of effects and rehashed storylines that are predictable from the first minute.
The negatives however are that this film is lacking in substance. It spends 3 hours telling a pretty simplistic story/stories dressed up with beautiful cinematography. It's a movie about remembering the joys of movies, and a tribute to a time of Hollywood excess.
Personally I enjoyed the break from the norm that Babylon provided. I'm just not sure that I'd recommend it to many people, and I wouldn't watch it again in a hurry. If you want to watch something a little different that will assault your senses for a few hours then give it a go. If your looking for a film to watch with your friends/partner on a sauturday night, then don't be fooled by the stellar cast. Find an alternative. save yourself 3 hours, and the confusion of asking 'was most of that film necessary'
