The book is based on the subtly of DV weaving into a relationship until it’s an all Consuming fear, and then the strength and support required to overcome it. The movie completely missed the point. Atlas is a side character that gives you hope not all men are like Ryle. Ryle is meant to give you the fear of the men who are. Ryle in the movie builds no fear, Atlas builds little hope, and Lily has no emotion. I appreciate movies have to speed up the story but this was disappointing.
