I have just come out of the debut screening at Event Cinemas and here is my critique as an admirer of Callas !
Strengths in Her Performance:
Physical Transformation & Presence:
Jolie’s ability to embody Callas physically is remarkable. From her posture to her expressive eyes, she effectively channels Callas’ elegance and vulnerability.
The film’s director, Pablo LarraÃn, is known for biopics (Spencer, Jackie) that focus on a subject’s psychology rather than just historical accuracy, and Jolie aligns well with this vision.
Subtlety in Emotional Depth:
Instead of relying on grand dramatics, Jolie delivers a more internalized, restrained performance. This approach allows for an intimate portrayal of Callas’ struggles, particularly her loneliness and artistic passion.
Diction and Accent Work:
Playing an international icon like Callas requires mastering her manner of speaking. Jolie’s accent work is subtle, not overly exaggerated, which helps make the performance feel authentic rather than theatrical.
Expressive Face and Eyes:
Like Callas, Jolie has a face that communicates a lot with minimal movement. She effectively conveys emotion without overacting, which suits LarraÃn’s often quiet, introspective storytelling.
Possible Criticisms:
Singing vs. Lip-Syncing:
Since Callas’ voice is irreplaceable, Jolie doesn’t attempt to sing but lip-syncs to actual Callas recordings. While her mimicry is strong, some viewers might find this a limitation in fully embodying the role.
Emotional Distance at Times:
Some critics argue that while Jolie captures Callas’ grace, there are moments where she feels a bit too controlled, possibly losing some of the raw passion that made Callas legendary. This is more a matter of directorial choice than acting ability.
Comparisons to Past Performances:
Previous portrayals of Callas (e.g., Fanny Ardant in Callas Forever) leaned more into melodrama, while Jolie’s approach is more introspective and I loved it.
Depending on audience expectations, some might prefer a more fiery interpretation of Callas’ life and emotions.
