Ergo Proxy is in many ways Brave New World 2.0. Without giving too much away, there's not much to be said about it other than "it's good, I recommend it". The nature of man is viewed through human organizational and control structure within the "steady state" model of a domed city (and coming to see the illusion from the outside). The dual nature of the creator, creators creating creators, logic, determinism, and "God's Plan", plays in as well, particularly in man's reaction to a "life after God". The structure of the mind, trauma, amnesia, and dissociation are underlying themes. Every scene is packed with detail, allegory, symbolism, and likely for a certain type of person, strong emotional context and relateability. It leaves a lot to think (or rethink) about, on a personal level and otherwise, and even leaves one with an unclear mix of hope and despair.
The relative and absolute, personal and impersonal, self and other, this time and all times, are often blended fairly seamlessly into a narrative framework. Not everyone likes this. A show like Ergo Proxy brings into view and sharply delineates the different "types" of people. And I think the polarized reviews become their own sort of draw.
The concise version, some people get something from it, some people don't. You'll just have to watch it.
