It was terrible!! When I wasn't tripping over trite plot contrivances, I was being beat over the head with the message that "Men, are useless and obstacles to female greatness and women are SOOOO strong."
The plot was weak. What EXACTLY did her mother do? The whole reason the Marquess was in danger was because he wanted women to vote? Maybe, that wasn't it either because the plot was so confusing.
The heavy handed feminist approach took away from any of the characters, Enola included, from being interesting. How can a character like Sherlock Holmes, who has had so many depictions, and is a beloved literary protagonist be so milquetoast and... boring? And why was Mycroft such a sociopathic meanie? There was no reason to do that to that character. He was only that way because they couldn't beat up in Sherlock.
Telling girls in explicit language "You're awesome!" doesn't produce awesome girls. I have produced three adults women who are pretty amazing. They are made by just giving them what they need to be great PEOPLE not girls. I mean really, she couldn't needle point or eat politely because those are "feminine"things? And we surely know she was NOT raised to be a traditional female! To have her do those things good as well would've been interesting because she was raised to Excel so realistically she would've done the "girl" things well too and have the other girls hate her. The headmistress. Let me guess she was the stock "internalized misogyny" female character?
It endeavored to be empowering to young girls and just came off as tone deaf and abandoning plot, compelling characters and clear narrative storytelling for a "message."
