I'll preface that I hope the show gets atleast one more season, but with how bad Star Wars fans bashed this show, I won't hold my breath. The highs for this show begin at episode 5 and stay high til the finale. But honestly that is too long for a society all diagnosed with ADHD.
Here is what the show did right:
1. Cinematography was excellent. The parallels drawn from earlier scenes really helped frame the characters and their actions/intentions.
2. The villain was well recieved. He was threatening but also had qualities that allowed him to be understood. A key to a great and convincing villainn is for the villain to have qualities that humanize his actions and force the audience to question if he is truly evil or simply misguided.
3. Choreography was on point. Loved that you could see the reference or homage to other work within the choreography. People crave good lightsaber fights and this show had them.
Here is what the show did wrong:
1: Started by convincing audiences that this story tried to make the "Chosen one" prophesy insignificant by creating more people with the Force. Left viewers with too many questions. Because of this, the show fell to the hubris of Star Wars fans who idealize the fictions of many different writers as one cohesive world.
2. The writing lacked the intricacies needed for telling good character arcs. Sol's infatuation with Osha seemed forced. Osha's arc seemed rushed. Mae's arc seemed arbitrary as though meant only as a reason to balance Osha's arc (but the Force loves balance).
3. Eight-episode formats can be aggravating. Especially when they are not hour long episodes. Acolyte could have done better with 12 or 14 episodes. This could have fleshed out some much needed character development that the writers forced us to infer and/or watch New Rockstars to get insight. Time and time again we find that nuance and... thinking, for lack of a better term, anger the average audience.
