Oscar Isaac played the lead so well that i didn't recognise him from his other work, an intense and layered performance thats his best ever imo. Anyone who likes a slow burn film that pays off will love this.
There is an almost Lynchian aspect to some of the scenes, an eeriness that pervades several key points in the narrative as it plays out.
This gets dark, but its heaviest moments are balanced with some beautiful moments, one long sequence in particular, that has Robert Levon Been's amazing score playing it's best card, the song Arise Sun over an inspired arial pan shot.
I hardly ever watch films more than once, I've hit this one three times.
If you don't need to be spoon fed narrative thats the style of most Hollywood fare, and love mood pieces that offer real characters with room to develop, do yourself the favour and give this a viewing.
