I am trying to keep this spoiler-free. It keeps an excellent balance between the original content and the new. We can bathe in the nostalgia of the hours of D&D streams we watch while still being pleasantly surprised with the small additions and alterations that work here but would have been impossible at a D&D table. This shows how good an onscreen adaptation can be when the people involved love and care about the original source material.

Say you had a favourite uncle. Then imagine someone killing that uncle in-front of you and then proceeding to urinate on the corpse. That is what in my opinion discovery did to Star Trek.
