I watched this tonight, and believe me when I say that I was very pleasantly surprised. Here are some of my ups and downs. SPOILERS AHEAD:
Ups:
- The opening scene was very captivating off the bat and I felt sucked in already.
- The scene inside the "communication device" was absolutely epic.
- The death of one of Ethan's closest friends. I didn't expect it, but it was heart-wrenching in my opinion. Noble sacrifice.
- Gabriel stealing the poison drive was absolute genius for the storyline. No matter how convoluted it got, whatever happened, Ethan would need to meet with Gabriel again in order to end the Entity.
- Loved the meeting scene. It was very cool to me to see everything, especially the "ticking map" of the global nuclear superpowers being taken over by the Entity. It felt so threatening!
- The fight scene between the Entity sympathiser and Ethan while he was doing his breathing training.
- Paris becoming good made me so happy. I also thought that coding the signal backwards in Morse was absolute genius.
- When Ethan got down to the Sevastopol, the jumpscare with the decomposing man pointing was gold. So was getting to the source code and back out. I was so tense!!
- My heart dropped when his gear got caught on the falling Sevastopol, especially when his mask fell off. Purely perfect.
- The tension between Grace and Ethan. I actually really liked this scene inside the decompression chamber.
- My favourite Mongolian babushka!!
- The reveal of the Entity's plan was perfect. Hiding in an inpenetrable data core while massacring humanity. Really nice!
- Benji getting shot. Although obviously I didn't want him to die, it was the right amount of tension we needed to balance the plane scene which brings me to my next...
- The plane scene was absolutely EPIC. The acrobatics, the tension, the movements, the CLUTCH.
Downs:
- Ethan getting kidnapped with Grace so quickly felt kind of out of nowhere and Gabriel didn't actually feel like he was there -- his presence was kind of useless.
- Jumping into the Bering was a very Ethan Hunt thing to do but part of me felt that the crew of the submarine immediately appearing and snatching him from nowhere was kind of weird.
- While Ethan was getting down to the Sevastopol, he got knocked by the Russian submarine that was in pursuit of the American one. I feel like that wasn't really addressed because I feel like it should have impacted his mission in some way, but it really didn't.
- When Ethan got the bends, it didn't really manifest in a way that I've seen before, and it felt very lacklustre. For example, in the movie Under Paris, the main character suffers from the bends in a very similar way, (being dragged down by a shark) and blood is coming out of her ears as her eardums explode. The portrayal didn't feel totally realistic.
- The plane scene only had two problems in my opinion. Firstly, Gabriel's death felt cheap and way too quick. Secondly, since when did Ethan have a second parachute?
This movie was really good, and I will definitely be rewatching it.
