One thing I liked about the TV series was that it was realistic to the time period the characters lived in, and I felt like I was in that world when I watched it. But in this movie, they go out of the way to display the inclusive values of the world we live in today, which no longer feels representative of that time period. I want to feel like it’s 9th century England, but when you make Aethelstan a gay man, you’re placing 2024 values in a world that was not like that at all. This ultimately detracts from the entertainment experience and prevents you from fully immersing yourself into the story.
