It’s not that the songs, in and of themselves, are low quality, it’s that it seems to be Dave is so hardline on evolving the sound and not being known for trying to reproduce “the magic” of the early days… he seems to absolutely refuse to write anything resembling the heart vibes and tone of Lover Lay Down even though we all know he could if he’d open up a little and let the fan love in (it’d be emotional for a lot of people to see lover lay down Dave again).
And despite this being about walking around the moon, Dave no longer seems to be attempting masterpiece moonshots like songs like “The Stone” anymore.
Groo Grux, Away From the World, Come Tomorrow…all had some good ones. Mercy is one of their best ever (though love can be a whisper), and snow outside is lovely. But every new album without seeing Lover Lay Down Dave again is starting to break hearts of the longtime fans, who could so use that vibe as medicine again in this harsh world.
