Poor representation of what otherwise could be political occurings . Take good actors and give them poor and unconvincing scripts they will deliver poor, unconvincing acting. An exaggerating parody of the genre at best, with an unrefined draft that saw the screen prematurely . There is that and there is the unfortunate choice of actors (e.g.Keira Knightley )- a too emotional, tragic Ana Karenina, but to the extent that she looked amateurish trying too hard to be a pro spy with half a heart ( one doesn't get to find out what the other heart was serving : ego, ideology , money, borderline ?) . It transpires especially in one of the last scenes where she was throwing a tantrum for not killing Trent herself , one of the most ridiculous scenes, you can almost hear it : give me that ! That's my shot!
When death ( or killing in this instance ) is not negotiable, the prelude has a higher bar and yet we see big displays of psychopathy in all its glory corrupted by remanences of love, revenge and even reflection !
The most 'correct', unassuming and boring actor as it is was Mrs Reed. And by being boring she did a good job and achieved the opposite effect - the role becomes interesting because the audience has the space to become reflective .
