I'm gonna be honest here, since I have been a fan of Visual Arts for over a decade. I picked this show up purely because of this and the striking visuals.
The story starts off in a typical slice-of-life show(created by Jun Maeda). The archtypes are Maeda's normal choices for what he likes. I don't mind even the dated clichés Maeda became famous for, but he should have stuck with the fantasy setting he created in the beginning.
(Spoilers)
The final parts of the show would be good if the plot wasn't so offensive for using disability as a plot device. I can tell that they tried to make the evil care facility a place seemingly devoid of life.
I worked beside children and adults with disabilities for many years, so I personally found some of the developments outrageous (and probably illegal)in the healthcare field. I get that showrunners have to "hollywood" up awful illnesses, but if you're going to do so, it needs time to develop. Those last few episodes did not do anything justice, and I was shouting at my tv for how ridiculous it was.
I know that I was tough on the show, but if you want a good Jun Maeda production, pick something else. I did actually enjoy the anime, but I can't help but think of how many issues that it had that I didn't even speak of.
