Calling it now: 2025 GOTY and flood of awards.
As an avid RPG player (Mass Effect Trilogy, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon Age Trilogy, etc.), Expedition 33's world building, character development, layered storyline and beautiful soundtrack had me hooked! I have never played turn-based games before, so I came into this game with an open mind and it was worth it. It took some time to get used to, but I was amazed by how enjoyable this game style is.
First off, you can customize each character based on your gamestyle and stack different boosters (Pictos and Luminas) to your liking. You can also choose what skills and weapons you use for each character, making it more personalized. You can rotate through different members of your team and enjoy various combos - kinda like ME and Dragon Age.
Second, the French KNOW how to make art. The game environment is breathtaking, cut scenes are cinematic, and the emotions in the voice acting + soundtrack is otherworldly. The team did an excellent job with animations and I could see even the microexpressions of the characters during the cutscenes. I lost track of how many times I dropped my jaw with just how breathtaking each level was. Literally felt like I was watching a movie at times.
Lastly, I have to applaud the writers and producers of this game. The overall plot is layered, deep, and intricate. Each act left you wanting more and desiring to uncover the story. The development and relationships built between the characters is so appreciated. These aspects of RPGs are what drew me to love this genre in the first place, and Expedition 33 did a phenomenal job. The choice you make in the ending left me stumped and had me reflect on the journey I travelled in the game.
This is a must play!!! Definitely one of my favorite games now.
