I had no expectations and I was still disappointed. I don't like the art direction and I found most of the music forgettable, but for me, the story and characters are the most important. Unfortunately, these are even worse.
The movie spends most of its time trying to convince you that Magnifico is pure evil when he rules one of the happiest kingdom ever and works hard to protect his people. He doesn't hurt anyone nor does he force anyone to do anything, and he lets his people live rent free. People voluntarily let him decide to let him grant their wishes, and Disney thinks that makes him Scar or Frollo.
At worse, he's a flawed hero. Next to any other Disney villian, he doesn't rank. He's such a good guy that the writers needed a plot device to make him just evil enough to reach the Disney villiany list. So what he occasionally mentions that he's talented and good-looking? He's earned it and it's a small price to pay to live in a kingdom where most are happy.
The protagonist Asha is just boring. She doesn't grow, nor is she challenged in anyway. She's not villianous, but she is less reasonable than the antagonist. She's surrounded by too many friends so they lack any development.
It's even worse when you factor in the marketing direction (which I found out about later) and the fact that this was supposed to be a 100 year anniversary movie.
The move is mediocre enough that kids will watch it, but I doubt they'll like it more than the movies they already enjoy. As for adults, I'm sure you seen some movies get better the more you think about it. This one keeps getting worse.
