I read another review that called Earth Abides a hopeful take on a post apocalyptic world. That sums it up very well. This is a show unlike any other I’ve seen, that may be good or bad depending on your range of viewing appetite. The unusual part is the slow charting of time in each episode. While time jumps by half a dozen year increments, the way the show unfolds feels like slow cooking. Earth Abides is slow cook tv, not something I remember well in the era of quick to digest, readily available content on multiple stream platforms. The focus is on the San Lupo community, and the main character Ish. All I can say without spoiling is that the show manages to convey intimacy, explore themes of self preservation and community and does so at a slow pace that could frustrate some viewers. So many times I want to be steered towards an objective or guess the outcome, and then I’ll remember that that’s not the point! You’re invited to engage with these people, their predicament and sit up close with them, which makes you feel the scares they face more closely. 5 episodes in and I look forward to new ones dropping. If you’re willing to go for a ride, at a slower pace and to lean in to a humanistic story, I think this show could be for you
