First of his books I have read, and hugely impressed by it. The style is elegant, allusive and poetic, without being ornate. The characters are complex, intelligently evoked and sympathetic. The moral and philosophical scope of the book is exhilarating. As several have said, it does alter your perspective of the natural world and our human relationship to it.
