A movie that feels like watching a movie made by people that have never spoken to a teenaged lesbian. In its 1h 23 minutes of runtime, ‘Bottoms’ offers no reprieve from the modern day trend of over-glossed, flat and repetitive world-building. Characters that truly feel like caricatures of themselves coupled with a plot-line straight out of an 8th grader’s melodramatic fan-fiction. Gratuitous violence that seems to have no consequences for the main characters, unnatural manufactured chemistry between love interests, and an overwhelming lack of effort to understand the real demographic of young lesbians and sapphics that this movie is based on. While silliness and fun were certainly the objectives of this film, as someone who is a queer young woman, this piece came across as more of a cash grab trying to capitalize off of desperate young sapphics searching for any representation. Satire can be incredibly effective when the creators behind it are ‘in on the joke’, the team behind ‘Bottoms’ was, unfortunately, not.
