Hyderabad was a state with its own unique personality, a mix of Deccan and the rest of India as well as from the Arab states.
This is a fascinating and hugely researched book on Salarjung 1, who was the Regent of the State when the Nizam was a minor. The internecine undercurrents between the Nobles and the Royal family are well detailed as is the crookedness of the British, who usurped the productive lands of Berar.
And yes, the Salarjung museum is not made by him. Recommended reading.
