My daughter-in-law gave me a signed copy of ” Anxious People” for Christmas. The story threads many narrative techniques: a narrator who speaks directly to the reader, transcribed interrogations, murder mystery clues sparingly dropped, and fairytale endings. A lot of thought and planning went into creating a cast of characters--unique, quirky, and appealing even when obnoxious to one another--who grow from having to endure captivity under unusual circumstances. This puzzle alone offers a wonderful reading experience. Additionally, the book touches painful themes with a humorous and forgiving approach. We learn about death, grief, and terrifying questions about our place in this world, what it means to love and be loved.
