Darbar is an allout rajini flick. There is no doubt about that and rajini delivers as always. The movie has the cake, frosting and icing for every rajini fan and moments are of surplus for those fans to go berserk.
However the movie desperately attempts to capture the essence of rajinis moondru Mugam and Baasha mixed together. Unfortunately baasha and moondru mugam had good storylines executed/shot tightly and cohesively. It also had other strong characters going toe to toe with rajini which made them all the more exciting. Baasha especially had a strong villain portrayed brilliantly by raghuharan. Darbar on the other hand falls miserably on this part. Sunil shetty doesnt come out as a strong villain. Nayanthara comes in and goes fleetingly, with Yogi babu delivering his quips filling the roles of a comedian.
1st act and final act falls down flatly. Mumbaikar actors speaking dubbed Tamil lines without any conviction makes it very to hard to relate with. Also rajinis introduction in the movie has got to be the weakest it has ever been in his entire acting career. Murgadoss has failed miserably to set up that wham bham rajini entry. Also having made a big build up for the villain throughout the movie, sunil shetty's portrayal rather comes out as dull and flat as possible in the final act. In fact he is only spoken about throughout 1st and 2nd acts, and he makes an entry only in the 3rd and final act.
The 2nd act has its moments with sufficient emotional contents and intriguing moments which plants the seeds for a decent storyline. It has all that a movie goer could expect. Be it love, light hearted comedy, mystery, twists, action sequences and many more.
On the whole seamless execution of the entire plotline with decent actors with a strong character base is very important for any movie to perform well. Rajini alone isnt enough for the success of a movie. Infact other good actors with strong portrayals helps to enhance rajinis performance. And I could say that rajini fans are yet to get that complete package in this last decade.
Rajini can do wonders. It comes down to how the directors and storytellers makes use of him to tell their stories. Rajini deserves better having provided service to the industry and fulfilling his fans for many decades.
Darbar.. go in light hearted without any expectations and cherish the moments wherein rajini does his charismatic bits.
