(NO SPOILERS) You know, I never come to review movies because they’re usually really good or really bad & it’s easy for the public to gauge which based on reviews/previews. For some reason, this movie has gotten a lot of good reviews and I really couldn’t tell you why.
Imagine going to drink a sprite at McDonald’s, just to find out it has no carbonation. That is my best interpretation of the way this film made me feel. The idea was there, the thought was put into it, but the execution was absolutely horrendous & left me with 100000000 questions. It was like biting into a peanut filled m&m just to discover no peanut inside, just air.
I respect the story line but there was absolutely no build up or backstory. It was like jumping in to a TV series on the last one or two anticlimactic episodes. The grabber had no backstory, the phone had no backstory, the children who had been kidnapped had no backstory, the main character & his family had no backstory- it made no sense.
I struggled to stay put throughout the whole movie, but if I’m spending money I’m going to see it through. I did get on my phone a couple times and even take a few leisurely bathroom breaks, which I NEVER do if I am invested in a movie. I had no fear of missing anything in the plot while I was in the restroom, because the plot already had so many holes it probably would’ve made more sense if I missed a few scenes.
Once again, I would like to say that the story line was decent. The grabber’s mask was cool, but a clear rip off on the joker. It deserves one star for those reasons alone.
The father and bullies in the movie were the only violent/“scary” parts about it. There was no point where I was scared of the grabber. And the children were all made up to act like they were 5+ years above their age emotionally, so I really did not feel any sympathy for them because they held themselves together like adults. The acting was bad. Everything was just really, really bad.
I had high hopes because of the production, writers and directors. But they were severely underwhelmed. Please save your money. If you’re looking for a new hereditary, conjuring, or any decent modern horror movie, look elsewhere. Please. It’s unfortunately not so bad that it’s hilarious, it’s so bad that it’s boring. So while I did laugh a few times, it wasn’t even worth it for the comedy. Thanks, but no thanks. 2.5/10
