Dull and overlong rewrite of the Wells classic. I saw the stage version of Jeff Wayne’s interpretation last year and that was as spectacular as this offering isn’t. I’m afraid that despite a promising beginning this BBC plodder fails to deliver and even manages to make the Tom Cruise film look classy. Yes, it’s that bad. The actors try their best but they are hamstrung by the clunky, politically correct resurfacing of this latest corporate disappointment. Hopefully once the BBC enters the real world and has to rely on a subscription-based model it will think twice before it wastes it’s resources on something so underwhelming.
